With December came commissions. I stayed up late painting while my husband stayed up late building a light table and a marble run for the kiddos. We both think that the ideal situation would be for us to get to work together all day on various projects. It's good time.<br />
<br />
This commission came first, from some friends of ours. Their little niece, who is the same age as my little girl, was killed in an accident recently. This was my first posthumous work, and my first time painting someone who I haven't actually seen before. It was difficult on both accounts. We had to send images back and forth as I was painting, trying to make sure I was getting the face right. When I've seen and talked to the person myself, there's a point where it just magically clicks and I know I've got it. So this was an interesting process.<br />
And then, of course, on an emotional level this was a new experience as well. I guess I would put this more in the category of spiritual/religious work. I have several friends who have lost children. I wondered how a piece like this would affect the parents. Would it be more difficult than good? So I had to make it a matter of prayer to get the right image, the right feeling. And I know I did have help. The ideas came directly and easily.<br />
I ended up dressing her in white (she loved the beach) and using the circle/square symbolism we see sometimes in our temples (with the circle being heaven and the square being the four corners of the earth). <br />

My good friend Liz saw the small works I did for my sis and bro. in law and wanted to commission some for her husband. We ended up choosing three images from their many travels around the world. These are quite small, so not a lot of detail.<br />

Next, my brother's birthday is just before Christmas, and I always feel like his birthday gets brushed over for the holidays. So I wanted to do something good for his birthday this year. This is a nice, big piece that I started many years ago, but never got past the underpainting. I called this one "Engel Onder De Windmolens" (translated from the Dutch: Angel Among the Windmills). <br />

And finally, one of six portraits I've been working on for the Bawden family. I'm trying to finish this and one other in the next few weeks and then the series will finally be done!<br />

My brother in law, an architect, recently commissioned me to do some paintings for my sister, who does interiors, to put on a wall they've had some trouble with. He picked up an idea from an art exhibit where each piece was hung flush with the next along the horizon line. So we decided to take that idea and do a timeline of sorts, moments in their lives.<br />
I settled on ten images, most are prettty small. I took some photos of the process along the way...<br />

This was a fun project, as I really only do portraits and figure work. So all of the architecture, landscape, interiors, etc., was all new territory for me. Also, the palette was very limited (white, black, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna), when I typically use a lot of color. The black became my blue, mixing with yellow ochre for the green. And the burnt sienna became my red.<br />
Thanks for the opportunity, Sam and Tris! It was really fun!<br />

My sis setup some art classes in her backyard for me to teach this summer. We just did one hour per class, once a week for a month. I think, between the two classes, we had about 28 kids, ranging in age from 3 to 15.<br />
We focused on watercolor, beginning with technique, and then moving on to projects which taught some basic art/design principles. Teaching kids like this was definitely a new thing for me--a lot of work--but I learned a lot. I was surprised by how much the skill and attention span varied from one kid to the next, seemingly regardless of age.<br />

One of our projects was this receding islands piece, based on a work by one of my favorite illustrators, Jon Klassen. We were able to use the texture techniques from a previous lesson, while also learning about distance, atmosphere, foreground/background, warm/cool, gradation, etc.. SO many good things about this lesson, but I really needed two hours to teach it, instead of just one.<br />

One of the lessons ended in a variety of root vegetable paintings. This might have been the kiddos' favorite, as it incorporated various media, and the stations/steps were clearly laid out on separate tables, so that there was very little instruction needed.<br />
We created the dirt with watercolor texture techniques, after having created roots with either rubber cement or white crayon as a resist. The beets/radishes were then stamped using both tempera and acrylic paints. From there, they had the choice of how to do the leaves: with watercolor, colored pencil, or another stamping technique. <br />

Sometimes it was fun just to watch the very young ones play and experiment with whatever materials we had on the tables, string, straws, you name it. We got really messy sometimes, which is so refreshing for kids!<br />

One lesson focused more on drawing and observation skills. We had two still lifes, one floral and one with plastic toy bugs. One hour was simply not enough time to even scratch the surface with this. So, even though they learned, I don't think it was very satisfying for them. I needed a good two hours at least, and probably two sessions at that. <br />

I also held an activity in our backyard, just for friends and neighborhood kiddos. I had been wanting to try the whole bubble painting thing. I didn't instruct anyone. We just put the materials out and let the kids go. It was fun! And the mess was actually kind of pretty!<br />

I've also realized, with all of this moving and packing and unpacking, that I've got a lot of stuff that I've never posted, a lot of student/older work. So I'll put some of that up in the next post.<br />
For now, let's do some post-student work...<br />
My husband, Aaron wrote a poem on his mission that I wanted to illustrate for his birthday one year. These are all watercolors, after Vereshchagin, Walter Rane, and Carl Bloch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyCkR8tTqzElqLb8YwxteVGxdVKObVoj_Rsdm1yVdju6RH3nRLTB1upbX_16E6sECL1lyvO-GhyXYp44Ajet62_PABg35HLJyC3GM6x3x_fRhQOumRDFQXNlw58_aAQEek-AT3o5_LFvc/s1600/IMG_1408.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyCkR8tTqzElqLb8YwxteVGxdVKObVoj_Rsdm1yVdju6RH3nRLTB1upbX_16E6sECL1lyvO-GhyXYp44Ajet62_PABg35HLJyC3GM6x3x_fRhQOumRDFQXNlw58_aAQEek-AT3o5_LFvc/s1600/IMG_1408.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
"I often ponder the solemnity of that cold and lonesome hill<br />
that stands as a witness of the Father's call and our Captain's reply "I will."<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhC0AoR7oyjAkwPPIkAZYUfB71MtoNEMfGid-tQEHjrfMrQkz_RUozWg-3XMmD87IWrpTUOYWZ8L6_zkMiOmHFy7Rbpd6FeMQDezxIJ49hsAj9v2IEGpUlqWtuVD1DhHfoT9j4D_RDDoI/s1600/IMG_1409.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhC0AoR7oyjAkwPPIkAZYUfB71MtoNEMfGid-tQEHjrfMrQkz_RUozWg-3XMmD87IWrpTUOYWZ8L6_zkMiOmHFy7Rbpd6FeMQDezxIJ49hsAj9v2IEGpUlqWtuVD1DhHfoT9j4D_RDDoI/s1600/IMG_1409.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
"But is it enough alone to know that we must follow where'er he goes<br />
For in the great halls of eternity echoes his call, "Come follow me,"<br />
But who will follow where our Captain calls,<br />
When at the gate he asks, "Watch with me,"<br />
It was easy to follow when he gave sight to the blind,<br />
"But please, dear Captain, not now, not me."<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzkfvgKSuGIuKjCd-q9z-7JfNLVnR9CVIvGsH53YnfywwI_6o4h-euTJBYOVchKvRT6QRMPfUjV4GTRnSKdE5dS6CeV3KKKc2ReB73xpr8ifo9xaeI3xs0aNQ8BcpndaWD2J55vxFTGC8/s1600/IMG_1411_2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzkfvgKSuGIuKjCd-q9z-7JfNLVnR9CVIvGsH53YnfywwI_6o4h-euTJBYOVchKvRT6QRMPfUjV4GTRnSKdE5dS6CeV3KKKc2ReB73xpr8ifo9xaeI3xs0aNQ8BcpndaWD2J55vxFTGC8/s1600/IMG_1411_2.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
And who will follow to King Herod's court, where scourged he fell to his knees.<br />
The pathway seemed clear as he taught on the shore<br />
Oh Captain, let us return to Galilee.<br />
Yet his love pulls me onward when my faith begins to flee<br />
No matter where my Captain leads, that echo resounds, "Come follow me."<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

So who will follow to Calvary, though cold and lonesome the hill<br />
To stand as a witness of our Captain's call, and our humble reply, "I will."<br />
<br />
He's pretty great.<br />
<br />
Here's a sketch I did of little Aaronie when he was a babe...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is what's on the easel right now. I started some portraits of my sister's kiddos several years ago, and I'm finally getting to this one, of Neve. It's almost done!<br />
Here are some shots of the various stages, in backward order:<br />

And I was asked to do something for a Christmas event with a fine art exhibit and concert, also in South Dakota. I had VERY little time to do it, so it's really not a great piece. I'm not even going to show you the whole thing. But here are some details.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The face of the baby Jesus is very small, about the size of my fingernail. He is looking up at the attending angel while Joseph and Mary are sleeping.<br />

Here's an update on the kids' art...It's fun to look at the last post about what they were drawing/painting. The contrast from then to now is so exciting! They grow up so fast!<br />
Aaronie has yet to really do much drawing. He's 4, but he just hasn't done much with a pen or pencil. He loves clay, and he has ventured into painting a little lately, so we'll keep working with him until he gains some more confidence and therefore more interest.<br />
But Nora and Sara, especially Sara, love everything arty.<br />
These pieces were all done in South Dakota, so Nora had just turned 6 and Sara was still 4...<br />
I wish I had their names on each of these, but I believe this is Sara's:<br />

The snowman is Nora's. She saw me take color notes on a drawing once, so that explains it. Look at the note below: "Im.invitng.you.ovr. BRING A CAT". Hahahahaha<br />

<br />
Also while in South Dakota, we did an art activity with all of the primary-age kiddos from our church. We did print-making, collage, watercolors, and then we did this collaborative piece:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHzLC1eGdd9y5vR9DIP2FibKizgTc6NgCNEdIhe49NCArJW9VRUf_6erV4O0EGuSZLiHw0f8eJkL9RMTWN52JROI0UuFybS7yzNtatKxmdsgjBM1tihyphenhyphendol3u0bFG6mk-AdSJQZDbZZEg/s1600/IMG_0325.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHzLC1eGdd9y5vR9DIP2FibKizgTc6NgCNEdIhe49NCArJW9VRUf_6erV4O0EGuSZLiHw0f8eJkL9RMTWN52JROI0UuFybS7yzNtatKxmdsgjBM1tihyphenhyphendol3u0bFG6mk-AdSJQZDbZZEg/s1600/IMG_0325.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I drew in the figures and painted all of the faces and hands, etc.. Then I mixed up some different yellows and greens in acrylic and let them go. I touched up over the top with some oils and then my kiddos did some drawing with acrylic markers. I've never really been too sentimental about any of my art, but a had a little moment while painting this, seeing Christ with my children...<br />
<br />
Anywho, now we are in the mountains of Utah. The weather is great! And we have a fenced-in yard! So we've had some fun with different art supplies. We set up some watercolors outside, and the kiddos decided to paint the trees and the scrap wood instead of just paper.<br />

And last, but not least, we've been learning to weave. We got them some cardboard looming boards (basically a thick piece of cardboard with notches all around the edges--you really could make it yourself) and let them pick out their own yarn. And they loved it! Each of them made something, and now they're learning to make pom-poms. They even took their looms to church to keep them busy during the main (sacrament) meeting. Art for the win!<br />

I've
been meaning to scan in and blog up my kids' artwork. Mostly because
Sara so often surprises me with the kind of work she can produce. She's
very careful and meticulous and does amazing things with drawing and
cutting. She loves it and she's good at it too. Looks like we have an
artist on our hands! Unfortunately, I didn't record the dates on a lot
of these. But I believe they were all done in the last 12 months?<br />
The
drawing above was done by Sara. The composition is really nice! But I
was particularly impressed with the little figure up on the right, with
the frown and the arms and legs. I haven't taught her any of this
stuff she's doing, so she's just watching and learning from what mom and
dad do and from the books we read.<br />
These next two are Nora's. I
taught her how to draw a jellyfish, and she went crazy. Her first
drawings, which I can't find, were gorgeous and carefully done. But
this is her usual drawing style as of late...wild and crazy with big
motions. Totally Nora!<br />

These
little pink ones by Sara are really interesting. Those two on the left
are side profiles. One of a woman, and the other of a.....alien?
Haha, I don't know. Nora did all of the writing.<br />

think this is my favorite of Nora's so far. She said that those were
tiger stripes (and you'll notice the vertical lines for the paws), and
that this is of "Rachel and Nora and Sara with one leg". She has a
thing for Calvin and Hobbes, so she *often* draws tiger stripes all over
her body. She was about 3 and a half here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And
this shows a couple of my favorites from Sara. That caterpillar with
the leaf was inspired by an illustration from Ladybug Magazine. When I
saw this I recognized it instantly. I just LOVE that she's looking at
other drawings, and remembering them and being influenced by art! And
aren't those little faces on the bottom AWESOME!?!?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here
is Sara mimicking Nora's jellyfish drawing (on the bottom), and then
she also drew that cat at the top. Totally her--no instructions from me
whatsoever. She was almost 2 and a half here.<br />

Some
fun coloring by Sara back in October. I love that she didn't just
stick to one color, but filled in some of the shapes with this splashy
color. Really cool!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCK8IyN6wg5bYpD5oL2R01XSfScrlqUuClaquZuNDlzsI83L8hnKv51g1Ytj4L_Z9nv-H70h0q-6WIcsDH4OWq4I_KyLILFuSSpGFHsfJYj_3oP-80T13V6dV6eRkbiwtAPQXu-BD_IJ8/s1600/Sara-4.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCK8IyN6wg5bYpD5oL2R01XSfScrlqUuClaquZuNDlzsI83L8hnKv51g1Ytj4L_Z9nv-H70h0q-6WIcsDH4OWq4I_KyLILFuSSpGFHsfJYj_3oP-80T13V6dV6eRkbiwtAPQXu-BD_IJ8/s320/Sara-4.png" width="320" /></a></div>
I think this drawing marked the first time I thought: Wow! That's really amazing! Really, she wasn't even 2 yet!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1MhF_ch-UF73DnJufC_pw3V3KJ-Pot2mv9uoV5_8dmnvFxqj1LEXjRLG5k02v2bhJ9LU9I_vymDXfjVFXI0CYUQj-Ro5Z0SzOZbtJkfiuli87jMTNYAz6qACl5yUADGqlOIiIV_Kr5tc/s1600/Sara-5.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1MhF_ch-UF73DnJufC_pw3V3KJ-Pot2mv9uoV5_8dmnvFxqj1LEXjRLG5k02v2bhJ9LU9I_vymDXfjVFXI0CYUQj-Ro5Z0SzOZbtJkfiuli87jMTNYAz6qACl5yUADGqlOIiIV_Kr5tc/s320/Sara-5.png" width="320" /></a></div>
And
here are some more cute faces by Sara. She was about a month shy of
3. I love the little house in the middle of the page, with windows.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipHMM7AoLACF2DWA_7P3VYk_5qSNHjoFotHxXlkTz3_-N0BFeJN3OATX66VAukZtFbFoQr0iiE0BfZPji3yZkc495-pz42csSOmCdYBhRXhIdPHnBqMuWodQ34v10slj-E-Vukci9-XGk/s1600/Sara-6.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipHMM7AoLACF2DWA_7P3VYk_5qSNHjoFotHxXlkTz3_-N0BFeJN3OATX66VAukZtFbFoQr0iiE0BfZPji3yZkc495-pz42csSOmCdYBhRXhIdPHnBqMuWodQ34v10slj-E-Vukci9-XGk/s320/Sara-6.png" width="320" /></a></div>
And
Nora and Sara worked on this one together. This wasn't intended to be
art at all; they were just playing with paint. But it's kind of nice,
no? And this is what Sara did today (on the right). This is a drawing
of "Amber with her long hair and the ocean all around her." The thing
is, she drew this upside down, so that it would be right-side-up for the
rest of us. Kind of amazing, huh? I think so. <br />

Maybe
someday we'll all be painting in the studio together, Sara sitting at
an easel and Nora throwing paint from the top of a ladder (; Love it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874081748581604118.post-56092308121415797512013-01-17T11:08:00.000-08:002013-01-17T11:08:16.770-08:00We are not dead yet! Well, ahem, it has been a while! I haven't done much art (besides the art of birthday cakes and the art of vaccuuming and the art of surviving with a 4, 3, and 2 year old in tow), but I have done <i>some</i>. So let's document, shall we?<br />

I've actually been teaching a little homeschooling family. I will be the first to say that teaching kids is not something I'm a natural at. But I'm learning. And they are absolutely the best people in the world, and very patient with me and my learning curve. I'm going to try to take some more pictures of the work they've been doing and put it up on the blog. The two photos above are part of an illustration project. Zach (10) wanted to illustrate a scene from the Hobbit, so we made a dragon out of clay and used Rice Krispies for the pile of gold, and a little lego Bilbo for Bilbo. Ha! I'm excited to see how his painting turns out.<br />
Over Christmas I was able to do a couple of drawings as gifts, one of my nephew Graham: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFhfaepL_rmwFBHONR93MMyOqrl16mPIg_2BuXQXKLWuFQAW-07-7VoeZWHv4XSdHfIRCDnI-ob9Ixziwei4-M9QyYkHsOMBIPWEvrzlyhR3u9juTiJCGv2L2MUJTEujrXTpQFkiQWKrI/s1600/IMG_1389.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFhfaepL_rmwFBHONR93MMyOqrl16mPIg_2BuXQXKLWuFQAW-07-7VoeZWHv4XSdHfIRCDnI-ob9Ixziwei4-M9QyYkHsOMBIPWEvrzlyhR3u9juTiJCGv2L2MUJTEujrXTpQFkiQWKrI/s320/IMG_1389.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
And this drawing is of Grandpa Fisher, who died a few years ago. This was for my mother in law. I got tears! It was a good moment.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8jAkW0fAfC4zbcnBQZms-SnpLqlzfLMEPsXHWROlDZkWuZkCeSABjam0HFpM3UFJAJRybA2dsGf8vkF2GsqdszPWw17w73g5ocL6zQeXYRJvofRv9LyAZ8MoPrvCEVkOSHv19mCoE2nA/s1600/IMG_5119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8jAkW0fAfC4zbcnBQZms-SnpLqlzfLMEPsXHWROlDZkWuZkCeSABjam0HFpM3UFJAJRybA2dsGf8vkF2GsqdszPWw17w73g5ocL6zQeXYRJvofRv9LyAZ8MoPrvCEVkOSHv19mCoE2nA/s320/IMG_5119.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I'm working on another drawing, one of my nephew, Ollie, and I'm also toying with the idea of bas relief sculpture for portrait work. My homeschooling family bought me some sculpting tools for Christmas (!!!) so I have what I need to begin! Hopefully I will be posting some sculpture here sometime soon.<br />
Happy arting!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874081748581604118.post-68819415853709107082011-10-17T19:08:00.000-07:002011-10-17T19:09:47.415-07:00THE PaintingSo we went out west this summer to work on THE painting. The big 8 foot by 4 foot thing that I started before Nora was born. It was supposed to be a school project, and then it was a school project on steroids. And I'm still working on it, three kids later. I've been reluctant to post about it, because it's kind of embarrassing. I actually submitted this thing to the Church a couple of summers ago, keeping with their deadline, thinking that it was "done enough." What a mistake. After seeing it again, I'm mortified that I actually let anyone see it in that state. It had SO far to go. It still has so far to go. I hate that so many people saw it then, as if it was a finished piece. I hate to let anyone see a painting before it's finished. So if you look at it and think "ewwww, I don't like it!", don't judge me. It isn't finished, ok? And I might not finish it before I'm 80. So here's the post. OK?!?!?!<br />I knew before we got out there that we'd have to take some more reference photos, a big group shot to track the shadows. I can't remember whose idea it was to use the laundry rack and blanket as the camel, but it worked! Kurt and offspring looked very epic and were just what I needed. (Thanks!)<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrkKiY2Bks3PuAj_jzg_xnxMlGj96r0tRu8KAUIl-Ng0DxBMiIpWJaIRFOUMJe2OEMu6q0O4OvxFCLt1pMuY9rZIzb8JdGp7iEQa8l9As-ud52MeCImaklwkVbzkN1MhUQ_1OomWmn5QBV/s1600/IMG_8085.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrkKiY2Bks3PuAj_jzg_xnxMlGj96r0tRu8KAUIl-Ng0DxBMiIpWJaIRFOUMJe2OEMu6q0O4OvxFCLt1pMuY9rZIzb8JdGp7iEQa8l9As-ud52MeCImaklwkVbzkN1MhUQ_1OomWmn5QBV/s320/IMG_8085.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664462486524942082" border="0" /></a>I had a good reference photo for a camel, with the right lighting and everything, but wasn't sure how a camel's shadow might look on a short figure to its right. So I made a really realistic looking camel out of kids' clay. Pretty believable, yeah? I found files of photography, graphic design, illustration, studies, and portrait work. Some things I'd like to revisit, explore a little further. As an artist, it is so gratifying to look through all of the work that you've done and realize the volume of it, especially when you haven't been producing much recently. I guess that's why we've got to keep some of our best work and look at it daily to remind ourselves of what we can achieve. Sometimes we forget.<br /><br />Here is some of what I found:<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyQ8LbMU0OrHBels2wuywnXkUvpNV9SFaro4RYROkr1tImkqZZXYuyM1sGoGS5lXKpYch9p0thDOTz_Nzdg26waBrj3ssQOJdx2F48u535k8yvBtoHcs7kXc7l0KRION2MrvZI6FQUdDw/s1600/alice2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 256px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyQ8LbMU0OrHBels2wuywnXkUvpNV9SFaro4RYROkr1tImkqZZXYuyM1sGoGS5lXKpYch9p0thDOTz_Nzdg26waBrj3ssQOJdx2F48u535k8yvBtoHcs7kXc7l0KRION2MrvZI6FQUdDw/s400/alice2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544765430300259938" border="0" /></a>This piece is one sampling from an Alice and Wonderland workup that I did a few years ago. I've got the whole dummy book laid out. I'm still really excited about the other pieces in the story. One day I'll finish the whole thing for my girls.<br /><br />I guess I've made it no secret that I have an interest in religious work. Here is one I did several years ago in gouache, an illustration of Lehi dreaming. At one point, his blanket had an old tree of life pattern woven through it. I still like the idea. Maybe I'll revisit that too.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7VkQJdoE9qYFv2B0X5gYajMVqbIOAAUNYW4N4q4EePNQeyz5gDUsNrytaJstbXhdX-WEepaPktYIFHJyhSXS3Vct-mWn58sLJuTcZkXogMX9xhWMBvo87BDuNJzOTbF6TpQoqUWrPUnI/s1600/IMG_1572.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 257px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7VkQJdoE9qYFv2B0X5gYajMVqbIOAAUNYW4N4q4EePNQeyz5gDUsNrytaJstbXhdX-WEepaPktYIFHJyhSXS3Vct-mWn58sLJuTcZkXogMX9xhWMBvo87BDuNJzOTbF6TpQoqUWrPUnI/s400/IMG_1572.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5544768523564558834" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Here is another book. I said that it was finished, but I have since changed my mind. I will be taking some weeks of "vacation" over next summer to make some necessary changes to the painting before it will really be finished, before I will really be satisfied with it. BUT...here are some photos of it as it hung at the art show. It is so big that I had to piece a number of photos together, so forgive the skewed parts, the foggy parts, and the spotty parts. It's so hard to represent it in miniature!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBCcBXd7H48PFigtYGXeZmdwjDL2nP9TRXavipEJ3mmIsYuIgItcWwSOoCBI5EHXgktIRSqxXYJVJsuBaBtcQbubVlz0UZCqo1qkcdi5QxB_SXV6sDnwWy4WL1_ZZA2ofHgD0VllTn7zo/s1600/lehitoprint.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBCcBXd7H48PFigtYGXeZmdwjDL2nP9TRXavipEJ3mmIsYuIgItcWwSOoCBI5EHXgktIRSqxXYJVJsuBaBtcQbubVlz0UZCqo1qkcdi5QxB_SXV6sDnwWy4WL1_ZZA2ofHgD0VllTn7zo/s400/lehitoprint.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521403379416744898" border="0" /></a>Here's the official disclaimer:<br />"Lehi’s Exodus/Into the Wilderness 48”x96”, oil/canvas<br /><span style="font-size:85%;">"And it came to pass that he departed into the wilderness. And he left his house, and the land of his inheritance, and his gold, and his silver, and his precious things, and took nothing with him, save it were his family, and provisions, and tents, and departed into the wilderness. 1 NEPHI 2:4<br />"And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led. 1 NEPHI 17:13</span><br /><br />"Lehi’s Exodus/Into the Wilderness depicts the departure of Lehi and his family as they journey out from Jerusalem and into the wilderness. Intended to be a personal piece rather than a realistic depiction of the actual event, the story is told in the faces. Shown from left to right are: Sam, a daughter, Lehi, Sariah, a daughter, Nephi, a daughter, Laman, and Lemuel. As Nephi is the one from whom the story derives, he is the only one looking directly at the viewer.<br />Care was taken to research the clothing, implements, and livestock of the era and area of Jerusalem in Lehi’s day. Designs from actual ancient textiles are incorporated into the costumes.<br />The purpose and meaning of the piece revolves around the idea that Lehi’s exodus, just as the Israelites’ and others’, is a type of each of our own journeys in the wilderness. Lehi’s wilderness, like ours, is a place of tribulation. But it is also a place of becoming, where, if we choose, we can draw closer to God."<br /><br />Here are some shots closer in...<br />Lehi, Sariah, and child:<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjApgi1YOANNpe2-_D0W7lDkNJVJ9Cw8MCPxwChnEkL2gUJVD2h1L_iAjsS0QsGWacDrYzsG91Qnc3MBR-u-P1wol_I-xNnQLJsgseEiXWsy5Qys-WHxVF8fk2nYsAb_935XvtZxMhB_M/s1600/IMG_6423+copy.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjApgi1YOANNpe2-_D0W7lDkNJVJ9Cw8MCPxwChnEkL2gUJVD2h1L_iAjsS0QsGWacDrYzsG91Qnc3MBR-u-P1wol_I-xNnQLJsgseEiXWsy5Qys-WHxVF8fk2nYsAb_935XvtZxMhB_M/s400/IMG_6423+copy.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521403372579734866" border="0" /></a>Nephi (flanked by Sariah and baby sister, and another sister):<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR9osMSz3za_Vone1MaCnp_S_gwtMj9TSmj1WaGboPr1v4z4Zlcg13R4JqiFrHWCq6c4ZGehuQ-Rs6TRtsGA-PLqVjnpoCDbG_ShkLIfC7XsiIx6hA7MR4p5Njpfnf5sSWwu2e2aWiwA4/s1600/IMG_6424+copy.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR9osMSz3za_Vone1MaCnp_S_gwtMj9TSmj1WaGboPr1v4z4Zlcg13R4JqiFrHWCq6c4ZGehuQ-Rs6TRtsGA-PLqVjnpoCDbG_ShkLIfC7XsiIx6hA7MR4p5Njpfnf5sSWwu2e2aWiwA4/s400/IMG_6424+copy.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521403365035235906" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874081748581604118.post-60397217383862511122010-09-13T11:43:00.000-07:002010-09-13T13:03:41.114-07:00On the easel<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiNZntbGYzzqIJon8uObIhMRsyQH20nn-nEj9l57IXhIZV4SEU8r_nfLg9cBQTqBIxPKeEuJzwiDbCyDAIIQ5Ih1EQaQV7Q4OfK1xb9vRakn_oE-myykowE7BeU1TwxNBZvzrXsRgb15A/s1600/IMG_6551.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiNZntbGYzzqIJon8uObIhMRsyQH20nn-nEj9l57IXhIZV4SEU8r_nfLg9cBQTqBIxPKeEuJzwiDbCyDAIIQ5Ih1EQaQV7Q4OfK1xb9vRakn_oE-myykowE7BeU1TwxNBZvzrXsRgb15A/s400/IMG_6551.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516470923315195490" border="0" /></a>Along with the Bawden portraits, I'm also working on a large piece mimicking the <a href="http://tandyiverson.blogspot.com/2010/03/vote.html">A Field to Grow Boys</a><a href="http://tandyiverson.blogspot.com/2010/03/vote.html"> In</a> piece for my brother-in-law Sam's office. The Lehi project is finally finished (minus a few fixes, a varnish, and a frame--that is, until Friday)! Time to show! We're calling it a faux show because we're pretending to be highbrow, and because we're holding it at a residence, rather than a gallery venue. Come, look at art, admire the fine architecture of SJB Architects, nibble, and talk. All are welcome!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874081748581604118.post-66492442369308812242010-03-22T12:39:00.000-07:002010-03-22T12:47:30.641-07:00Vote!Alright, I'm submitting a couple of pieces to the Spring Salon at the Springville Museum of Art. I have three candidates, but I can only submit TWO, so I need your input! Which of these three should I submit?<br />There's this one, which I've posted about before. It is now framed...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheEa63h38p17zsGf2BkSMafwPbvV7iWs_y0l0PhgEchhrX_iOPDoqWKv6mWbyOUHLd4EAm2ndo8tHDcYoIUvWcKpJcKdLdFNypUgT8omHy6fL-ifFWBn_dMRC7xmaQckFjrCPTRVPnbsY/s1600-h/noraframed.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 330px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheEa63h38p17zsGf2BkSMafwPbvV7iWs_y0l0PhgEchhrX_iOPDoqWKv6mWbyOUHLd4EAm2ndo8tHDcYoIUvWcKpJcKdLdFNypUgT8omHy6fL-ifFWBn_dMRC7xmaQckFjrCPTRVPnbsY/s400/noraframed.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451545726270137026" border="0" /></a><br />There is this one, which I have also posted about, but I've fixed the background as per some friendly advice...this one has not yet been framed, but that is easily remedied...<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQB4tGPpwC8cj5ldsBONC_dueKdXdYnbzsryDdeBBHnzSWUyY8MBAYAmW_8RXbcpVgpPs179GQYWNZHV6s0nZx7YpLBeJah3v4LYzSAgu62u5V9pDsnN8ZzINNdRoYqBeumVHaqTECJkM/s1600-h/norafix.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 392px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQB4tGPpwC8cj5ldsBONC_dueKdXdYnbzsryDdeBBHnzSWUyY8MBAYAmW_8RXbcpVgpPs179GQYWNZHV6s0nZx7YpLBeJah3v4LYzSAgu62u5V9pDsnN8ZzINNdRoYqBeumVHaqTECJkM/s400/norafix.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451545712088918338" border="0" /></a><br />And then there's this one, which I STILL cannot get a good photo of. HECK YES I use photographs! It's kind of clumsy, though. First you have to stare at strangers who get kind of freaked out sometimes. And then you have to ask them if you can take some pictures of them to use in a painting, which gets even stranger.<br />So far, with my Lehi project I've been pretty lucky. Between Springville and Bountiful, I've been able to pick models out of the people I know! For the baby, I used my daughter Nora...<br />We had to use Bonnie's cat to persuade her to stay on dad's shoulder and look in the right direction.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0W0cei4mCQzuTPiVgPABkkUdHKkcVvYuXXgA5FVHSMaG5NzBdU83raLfvSchobgGuUMMlIaPydxdcc2qS5AZsBq2YFzpm8koc4J05vzigxVBk2z6QmaAh3QUPLBgg5TXxdDN5nwAVv9K/s1600-h/IMG_4954.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG0W0cei4mCQzuTPiVgPABkkUdHKkcVvYuXXgA5FVHSMaG5NzBdU83raLfvSchobgGuUMMlIaPydxdcc2qS5AZsBq2YFzpm8koc4J05vzigxVBk2z6QmaAh3QUPLBgg5TXxdDN5nwAVv9K/s400/IMG_4954.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448683554750113490" border="0" /></a>Our good friend Bonnie posed as Sariah, and MAN was she good! I really couldn't have found a better Sariah. But how did they wear those head things without making them pointy on top? I've currently got four little portrait commissions I'm working on, and I took some more reference photos for the Lehi project (thanks, Bonnie--she was an excellent model), which is coming along slowly.<br />Here's what's on the easel right now (it's actually on the drafting table, if you want to get particular). It's a bit ambitious, and it's got a LONG way to go, so don't judge me (; but I'm excited to fix the problems and see it finished!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijJBCuDjMcwlL3P082RjE-86DvG_vWlg9xXE7ZBn5HxLXnR1FLs3Hp3xNWhCcffWy_07k892Si7QY0T2TddtdNl250fU9wKsdD58xYm8zwiy4AR7eVSNjGWClbwjkWHkoyjEkLnLhHjR4/s1600-h/IMG_9928.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijJBCuDjMcwlL3P082RjE-86DvG_vWlg9xXE7ZBn5HxLXnR1FLs3Hp3xNWhCcffWy_07k892Si7QY0T2TddtdNl250fU9wKsdD58xYm8zwiy4AR7eVSNjGWClbwjkWHkoyjEkLnLhHjR4/s400/IMG_9928.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425720972430484898" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874081748581604118.post-55082010276306981642009-11-12T14:54:00.000-08:002009-11-12T15:35:05.175-08:00Newborn/graphite<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0jPguOL0VogjzqW2rYlZGv0mfVPQtWuCFgR7PolaIHjNUd_aeXrP9LtT12AMG4dRUUOilBGnUHiZS8QHB0yU3d7GoA9m1Inx81Ktbygw-k98GRNM6zIRpe533WxMyB1Cpa5YgGJJGTc0/s1600-h/NoraDrawingScan.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 289px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0jPguOL0VogjzqW2rYlZGv0mfVPQtWuCFgR7PolaIHjNUd_aeXrP9LtT12AMG4dRUUOilBGnUHiZS8QHB0yU3d7GoA9m1Inx81Ktbygw-k98GRNM6zIRpe533WxMyB1Cpa5YgGJJGTc0/s400/NoraDrawingScan.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403363380855668098" border="0" /></a>Just thought I'd post this too, since I'm making all of these posts. Here are the results...<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjPrREqZ-5UX4srbmedkgigxKhUJPkERnIgR3ZvWFhyphenhyphenqFzoLPx2K9Rqtjj-F1pHm-9KdC11hk0Sub-DXj2mV6HML293zPQi7Mh25Y4QRFqC4H6cctCPNRaJzuXYoFR7pHhfU2fpU6o76s/s1600-h/IMG_9797.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 282px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjPrREqZ-5UX4srbmedkgigxKhUJPkERnIgR3ZvWFhyphenhyphenqFzoLPx2K9Rqtjj-F1pHm-9KdC11hk0Sub-DXj2mV6HML293zPQi7Mh25Y4QRFqC4H6cctCPNRaJzuXYoFR7pHhfU2fpU6o76s/s400/IMG_9797.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403285824716564402" border="0" /></a><br />This first one was fun, and although it is interesting enough, I don't think I'd ever paint like that. Something about it just doesn't work. It looks like I'm trying to be someone else, which, for this assignment, I was. For the next painting, I took what I learned from the first, put away the Ann Gale painting that I was looking at, and just painted. This image is a little distorted as you can tell, but WOW are they different! The one on the right is the original, done in muted colors (mostly glazes) over a grisaille (which was actually a drawing). For the one on the left, I didn't spend the time on a detailed drawing, but went straight into paint. The result was more vibrant colors, more painterly brushstrokes, but also a less accurate image. I'm still going to work on it, because I can't stand it being less than good. So maybe I'll do an update later...now for some sandpaper (;Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874081748581604118.post-68412037915134564572009-11-09T20:27:00.000-08:002009-11-09T21:09:43.410-08:00Nora<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE9rlC-1nYg57VyomMLd6ncsL1QlqGnhn53wif6EI8B-JP_qyyfGv627pZAbr0Id3wkS7mGTPyhlEyYqxuMycykD6pUr-azv91S94sW1x8p_NeGc3oy1kJnrDwH3SBl2Crx39-u7lFRBg/s1600-h/IMG_4678.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 281px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE9rlC-1nYg57VyomMLd6ncsL1QlqGnhn53wif6EI8B-JP_qyyfGv627pZAbr0Id3wkS7mGTPyhlEyYqxuMycykD6pUr-azv91S94sW1x8p_NeGc3oy1kJnrDwH3SBl2Crx39-u7lFRBg/s400/IMG_4678.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402327064377489842" border="0" /></a>This is a piece that I did recently for Justin Taylor's head painting class at BYU. It's of my daughter, Nora. Tried out Walter Rane's sandpaper technique and I like it! Used a well-developed drawing as a grisaille underneath, and then Justin's flesh combo over the top. I really like this technique, and I think I'll be doing a lot more of it from now on. His palette simplifies the process and, for me, brings about a more beautiful result. Thanks, Justin!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1
